WHEREAS BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS OBSERVED EACH FEBRUARY TO HONOR THE RICH HERITAGE, ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WHOSE ENDURANCE, CREATIVITY AND LEADERSHIP HAVE SHAPED THE UNITED STATES AND STRENGTHENED THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY. I'VE HEARD COMMENTS THAT THE CIVIC CENTER DOES NOTHING FOR THE VILLAGE. WE. BUT WE KNOW THERE ARE COMMUNITY GARDENS. THERE ARE HOLIDAY EVENTS FOR THE CHILDREN, A RENTAL OPTION FOR THOSE NEEDING A PLACE TO CELEBRATE SPECIAL EVENTS, AS WELL AS PUBLIC MEETINGS AND EVENTS.
I'VE HEARD THAT THIS IS A RETALIATION FOR THE CIVIC CENTER'S BOARD REFUSING TO SELL THE BUILDING TO THE VILLAGE, WHICH THEY WEREN'T ALLOWED TO DO ANYWAY DUE TO THE COVENANTS SET UP FOR THEIR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION. AND I HOPE TO GOD THAT THAT RUMOR IS NOT TRUE.
I'VE HEARD THAT THE GRANT WAS COSTING THE VILLAGE MONEY TO KEEP UP, BUT AS I UNDERSTAND IT, ANY EXPENSES WOULD HAVE BEEN REIMBURSABLE THROUGH GRANT FUNDS. THIS IS ALL VERY UPSETTING, BUT IT'S MORE UPSETTING TO THINK THAT OUR VILLAGE GOVERNMENT WOULD TREAT ANY ORGANIZATION WITHIN OUR VILLAGE LIKE THIS. THE CIVIC CENTER HAS BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF INDIAN TOWN LONG BEFORE INDIAN TOWN WAS A VILLAGE, AND TO BE TREATED LIKE THIS IS DESPICABLE. I'M A ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND WEST PALM BEACH, ONE OF THE LARGEST HIGH SCHOOLS IN WEST PALM BEACH AT PALM BEACH LAKES HIGH SCHOOL. SO WE HAVE OVER 3000 FOR AROUND 3000 STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL. SO IT'S A REALLY BIG SCHOOL. AND I WANTED TO HELP OUT. I WANTED TO HELP OUT WITH THE TOWN WHEN WE FIRST MOVED HERE, WE FIRST I GOT A CHANCE TO GLANCE AT THIS TOWN, AND I KNEW IMMEDIATELY THAT THIS WAS GOING TO BE HOME FOR US. SO ME AND MY FAMILY MOVED OVER TO TERRA LAGO AND WE WERE REALLY EXCITED. STILL EXCITED ABOUT A MONTH AGO. SO AND MY EXPERTISE IS IN SPORTS.
SO THAT'S WHERE I WANT TO LEND MY HELP TO ANY WAY I CAN IN THE SPORTS. AND I KNOW WITH ME, SPORTS CHANGED MY LIFE. I WAS ABLE TO PLAY COLLEGE SPORTS, ABLE TO MOVE AROUND THE COUNTRY AND SEE ALL TYPES OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN AFFORDED. OPPORTUNITY HAD NOT BEEN FOR SPORTS. SO I THINK ALL KIDS SHOULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY SPORTS AND A SAFE AND FUN ENVIRONMENT. SO I'M EAGER TO GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THE COUNCIL, WITH EVERYONE THAT'S INVOLVED IN SPORTS FOR THE KIDS HAVEN'T GOTTEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET TOO MANY OF THE KIDS, BUT I'M SURE THEY'RE EAGER TO HAVE AN ORGANIZED SPORTS PROGRAMS THAT THEY CAN REALLY FEEL SAFE. I KNOW I KEEP SAYING SAFE BECAUSE THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO FEEL SAFE IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT, TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE THAT ARE BACKING THEM, THAT THEY CAN PLAY AND ENJOY THEMSELVES AND, AND POSSIBLY MOVE FORWARD INTO A COLLEGIATE TYPE OF ATMOSPHERE. BUT THAT'S NOT THE GOAL. THE GOAL IS TO, I THINK, IS TO GET EVERYONE INVOLVED. SO I APPRECIATE YOU AND THANK YOU EVERYONE, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THE COUNCIL.
