AND THOSE VALUES MATTER DEEPLY TO RESIDENTS, AND THEY ARE ESSENTIAL AS THE VILLAGE PLANS FOR THOUGHTFUL, BALANCED GROWTH. OVER MANY DECADES, FPL HAS DEMONSTRATED A CONSISTENT RESPECT FOR THE COMMUNITIES AND NATURAL SYSTEMS IN WHICH IT OPERATES, NOT ONLY IN INDIAN TOWN, BUT THROUGHOUT MARTIN COUNTY AND ALL OF FLORIDA.
COASTAL AREAS AND WATERWAYS ARE DEFINITELY IN THEIR AREAS, AND INDIAN TOWN, A POWERFUL EXAMPLE OF THEIR STEWARDSHIP WAS FPL'S PROTECTION OF THE BARLEY BARBER SWAMP. AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS, IT'S AN EXTREMELY OLD RARE GROWTH BALD CYPRESS SWAMP LOCATED DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE POWER FACILITY OUT OFF OF 710. AND WHEN THAT DEVELOPMENT OCCURRED DECADES AGO, FPL MADE THE DECISION TO PRESERVE THAT THEY WERE NOT TOLD THEY HAD TO. THEY HAD ALREADY MADE THAT CHOICE. AND IT'S OVER 400 ACRES. I'VE LIVED IN FLORIDA MY WHOLE LIFE. I'M GENERATIONAL FLORIDIAN, AND I'VE BEEN IN A LOT OF WOODS IN FLORIDA, AND THE ONLY TIME I'VE EVER SEEN A PANTHER IS ON THEIR PROPERTY. AND I THINK THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES TO THE CONSERVATION EFFORTS THAT THEY PUT IN. SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE MENTION OF THAT. AND BEYOND THERE, THEY HAVE SEVERAL DIFFERENT CONSERVATION EFFORTS THAT THEY'VE DONE AT TURKEY POINT. THEY'VE MADE NATURAL OR CRITICAL BUFFERS BETWEEN THEIR OPERATIONS AND THE SURROUNDING ECOSYSTEMS. THEY'RE RIGHT THERE ON THE INTRACOASTAL. THEY HAVE A CROCODILE SANCTUARY. I DID NOT KNOW THAT. I FOUND THAT OUT THROUGH MY OWN RESEARCH. AND THEN THEY ALSO HAVE SEVERAL ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION PROJECTS THAT THEY'VE DONE IN RIVIERA AND SHORELINE PROTECTION AND WATER AND QUALITY WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES. IN ADDITION, THEY'VE ALSO STEWARDED MORE THAN 13,000 ACRES OF WATER RELATED CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT LANDS ASSOCIATED WITH ITS FACILITIES. DO YOU WANT ME TO STOP? BUT I WANTED YOU TO. I ALSO WANT TO QUICKLY MAKE MENTION THAT ALL OF THESE LANDS THAT THEY HAVE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION OF CONSERVING AND PRESERVING ON THEIR OWN, THEY ARE PAYING THAT BILL TO MANAGE, NOT THE TAXPAYERS, NOT THE STATE OF FLORIDA. BUT I TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT EVOLUTION OF OUR COMMUNITY.WHEN WE LOST FLORIDA STEEL, MY SISTER HAD TO MOVE TO MISSISSIPPI TO GO TO MISSISSIPPI STEEL, WHERE HER HUSBAND WORKED. WHEN WE LOST THE CITRUS INDUSTRY AND THEN THE JUICE PLANT, MANY OF OUR RESIDENTS HAD NOWHERE TO GO. INDIANTOWN WAS CITRUS BACK IN THE DAY. UNFORTUNATELY, THE COST OF PRESERVING THAT ARE REINITIATING. THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE INDUSTRY TO THRIVE AT THIS DAY AND AGE. WE LOST THE TRUST PLANT. WE LOST THE EGG FARM. SINCE WE'VE INCORPORATED, WE'VE SEEN NEW INDUSTRY COME BACK AND INVEST IN OUR COMMUNITY. BUT AS FAR AS FPNL HAS BEEN WITH US, IT BENEFITS OUR SMALL BUSINESSES AND OUR LARGE BUSINESSES.
